Summary:

The United States Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (USAPECS) is excited to invite you to our upcoming webinar, “Introduction to Arctic Disaster Risk Reduction.” This event is held in collaboration with our partners at the Arctic Risk Management Network (ARMNet) on August 29, 2025.

This webinar will provide an overview of applying historical, ecological, and social sciences to study Arctic hazards, working with local communities and emergency management to improve the translation of research into practice, and increasing local preparedness and resilience. We will also advise early career researchers on the needs of the Office of Emergency Management and highlight ways to get involved, such as through the Arctic Disaster Early Career Association (ADECA).

Several presenters will highlight case studies on disaster risk reduction topics, including Arctic diplomacy and a tundra greening engineering study on the coastal berm in Utqiaġvik that serves as a storm surge barrier. An extended Q&A session will follow.
